# Change the From address

> Send download emails from your own domain, and authenticate them so they arrive.

By default download emails come from a Filemonk address. Sending from your own domain looks like you, and, once authenticated, lands in inboxes rather than spam. This is the single most useful change you can make to email delivery.

## Before you begin

- Sending from a custom domain with DKIM authentication is a paid feature.
- **Gmail, Yahoo, and other platform addresses cannot be used.** You need an address on a domain you control, for example `hello@yourstore.com`. The alternative is Filemonk's default address.
- DKIM needs a DNS record adding to your domain, so have access to your DNS or someone who does.

## Set it up

1. Click **Filemonk** in the left menu of your Shopify admin.
2. Click **Settings** in the app's menu, then open the **Email** tab.
3. Click **Customize email** to open the email editor.
4. In **Sender information**, set the **From name**, which is what customers see as the sender.
5. For **From address**, choose **Use your own email** and enter your address, or leave **Default address** to send from Filemonk.

### Authenticate with DKIM

Google and Yahoo require DKIM authentication for bulk senders, so this is not optional if you want reliable delivery:

1. In the same section, click **Download records** to get your DNS records.
2. Click **Read instructions** and follow them to add the records to your domain's DNS.
3. Wait for DNS to propagate, then check back. The editor shows **DKIM authenticated** once it is verified.

Until authentication completes, emails are sent from the fallback address shown in the editor, so nothing breaks while you set it up.

## Check your setup

Send yourself a test email, then check the sender name and address as they appear in the inbox, and whether it landed in spam. An address on your own domain with DKIM verified should arrive normally.

## Troubleshooting

### Email address ineligible for sending

You entered a Gmail, Yahoo, or similar platform address. Those cannot be used as a sending address. Use an address on your own domain, or Filemonk's default.

### DKIM not authenticated

The DNS records are missing, mistyped, or have not propagated yet. Re-download them and compare against what is in your DNS, character for character, then allow time before re-checking.

### Emails still land in spam

Work through:

1. DKIM shows as authenticated.
2. The From address matches the domain in the DKIM record.
3. Your subject and body do not read as promotional. Heavy formatting and urgency wording hurt.
4. The domain is not newly registered, since new domains are treated with suspicion for a while.

### Email verification in progress

Your template content was flagged for review by Filemonk's support team, and sending is paused until they clear it. Contact support.

### Customers reply and I never see it

Replies go to the From address you set, so use a real monitored mailbox rather than a no-reply address.

## FAQ

### What is DKIM, in practice?

A DNS record that lets receiving mail servers verify the email genuinely came from your domain. Without it, mail from your domain sent by another service looks like forgery, which is why it lands in spam.

### Can I use my Shopify store's email address?

Only if it is on a domain you control and you can add DNS records for it. A Gmail address behind a Shopify store still cannot be used.

### What happens while DKIM is pending?

Emails keep sending from the fallback address shown in the editor, so customers are never left without their files.

### Does the From name have to match my store?

No, but it should be recognisable. Customers who do not recognise the sender do not open the email.
