# Customize the email template

> Change what the download email says and how it looks.

The download email is often the first thing a customer receives after buying from you. The email editor controls its sender, wording, colors, logo, and footer, with a preview beside the controls.

## Set it up

1. Click **Filemonk** in the left menu of your Shopify admin.
2. Click **Settings** in the app's menu, then open the **Email** tab.
3. Click **Customize email**.
4. Work through the sections, then save.

## What you can change

**Sender information** covers the **From name** and **From address**. See [Change the From address](https://help.filemonk.io/change-the-sender-address/).

**Email content** is the wording:

- **Subject**. Use **Variables** to include order details rather than typing them.
- **Body**, the message above the download button.
- **Button text**, which should say what it does, for example "Download your files".
- **Footer**, useful for a support line such as telling customers to reply if they cannot access their content.

**Email styling** covers **Text** and **Background** colors, **Font**, **Button background**, **Border radius**, and your logo **Size**.

Two toggles worth knowing: **Hide file extensions**, which shows `Book` instead of `Book.pdf`, and **Hide 'Powered by Filemonk' watermark** on paid plans. See [Remove Powered by Filemonk](https://help.filemonk.io/remove-powered-by-filemonk/).

**Advanced settings** holds **Email CSS**, for styling the controls do not reach. Note that CSS changes cannot be previewed: save and send a test to see them. ## Write it well

Customers are scanning, not reading. Say what they bought and how to get it in the first line, put the button high, and keep the footer for the "if something is wrong" line. Long welcome copy pushes the button below the fold on a phone, which is where most of these are opened.

## Check your setup

Send yourself a test email and open it on a phone as well as a desktop. Check the sender name reads properly, the button is visible without scrolling, and the link works. See [Create a test order](https://help.filemonk.io/create-a-test-order/).

## Troubleshooting

### Changes aren't showing in emails

Confirm you saved. Remember the email template and the download page are separate editors, so a change made in one does not appear in the other.

### A variable printed as text

It was typed by hand and does not match. Insert it from **Variables**.

### My CSS did nothing

CSS cannot be previewed, and email clients ignore much of it. Save, send a test, and keep to simple properties. Use the **Selectors** list rather than guessing class names.

### There are one or more errors with your settings

A required field is empty: From name, email address, subject, body, or button text. The banner lists which.

### The email looks different in Outlook

Normal. Email clients support different subsets of CSS. Test in the clients your customers actually use rather than chasing pixel parity.

## FAQ

### Is there one template or several?

One design underpins the download email, the preorder release email, and the notify-buyers email. Those have their own subject and body, but share this styling.

### Can I send different emails per product?

No. For product-specific instructions, add a custom message to the download page instead. See [Add custom messages and download instructions](https://help.filemonk.io/custom-messages-and-instructions/).

### Can I translate the email?

Yes, if you sell in several languages. See [Translate the text customers see](https://help.filemonk.io/translate-customer-facing-text/).

### Does editing affect emails already sent?

No. Sent email is sent. Changes apply to future sends, including re-sends from an order.
