# Upload files

> Add the digital files you sell to your content library, so you can link them to products.

Every digital product you sell starts with a file in your content library. Upload the files first, then link them to the Shopify products your customers buy. By the end of this guide your files are stored and ready to link, and nothing is visible to customers yet.

## Before you begin

- Your files count against the total storage on your plan. Filemonk checks this before an upload starts. See [Filemonk pricing and plans](https://help.filemonk.io/pricing-and-plans/).
- Keep the browser tab open until the upload finishes. Closing it mid-upload cancels the transfer.
- Uploading a file does not put it on sale. You link it to a product afterwards.

## Choose how to add files

| Use this | When |
|---|---|
| **Upload files** | The files are on your computer. This guide. |
| **Create file from link** | The files already live in Google Drive, Dropbox, or another host. See [Add files from Google Drive or Dropbox](https://help.filemonk.io/add-files-from-google-drive-or-dropbox/). |
| **Import** | You have many products and files to set up at once, from a CSV. See [Bulk add digital products and files](https://help.filemonk.io/bulk-add-products-and-files/). |

## What customers will see

Nothing, yet. A file in your content library is not reachable by anyone until you link it to a product. Once linked, it appears on the download page and in the download email for customers who buy that product.

## Set it up

1. Open your Shopify admin and click **Filemonk** in the left menu.
2. Click **Content library** in the app's menu, then open the **Files uploaded** tab.
3. Click **Upload files**. An upload window opens.
4. Add your files, either way:
   1. Drag them onto the window, or
   2. Click **browse files** and pick them.
5. Click **Upload 1 file**. The button counts your files, so it reads **Upload 3 files** if you added three.
6. Wait for each file to reach 100%. A **Files uploaded** message confirms it finished.

Your files now appear in the list with their **Type**, **Size**, and **Uploaded At** time.

## Check your setup

Find one of the files you just uploaded in the **Files uploaded** list and check the **Size** column matches the file on your computer. A size of zero, or a file missing from the list, means the upload did not complete.

To see how much of your storage is left, go to **Home** in the app's menu and find the **Usage** card, then look at **Upload**.

## Troubleshooting

### File size exceeds your plan limit

This is about your total storage, not that one file. Filemonk adds the files you are uploading to everything already in your content library and compares the total against your plan.

Two ways out:

1. Click **Upgrade plan** to move to a plan with more storage.
2. Delete files you no longer sell, then upload again. See [Manage your files](https://help.filemonk.io/manage-your-files/).

### Upload failed

Filemonk shows this when the transfer itself breaks, usually a dropped connection on a large file. Retry the upload first. If the same file fails twice, click **Contact Support** in the message and tell us the file name and size.

### Nothing happens when I click Upload

Filemonk checks your plan limits at the moment you add files to the window, and blocks the upload if they would be exceeded. Remove some files from the window and try again, or free up storage first.

### The file uploaded but customers can't download it

Uploading only stores the file. It reaches customers once it is linked to a product they buy. See [Create a digital product](https://help.filemonk.io/create-a-digital-product/).

## FAQ

### What file types can I upload?

Any type. Filemonk does not restrict formats, so PDFs, audio, video, images, zip archives, and software installers all work the same way.

### Is there a limit on a single file?

There is no per-file limit, and no limit on how many files you upload. What matters is the combined size of everything in your content library against your plan's storage.

### Where do I see how much storage I've used?

On **Home**, in the **Usage** card, under **Upload**. It shows what you have used and what is left on your current plan.

### I have a new version of a file. Do I upload it again?

No. Replace the existing file so everyone who already bought it keeps working links. See [Replace a file](https://help.filemonk.io/replace-a-file/). Uploading a second copy creates a separate file that no product is linked to.

### Does uploading a file affect existing orders?

No. Uploading adds a file to your library and changes nothing for orders already placed.

### Can I upload a folder?

Not as a folder. Select the files inside it, or upload a zip archive. You can group files into folders inside Filemonk after uploading. See [Organize files with folders](https://help.filemonk.io/organize-files-with-folders/).
