Change the app language for email and the download page
Filemonk sends emails and shows download pages in one language by default. You choose which, and if you sell across languages, you can have each customer see their own.
Set your default language
- Click Filemonk in the left menu of your Shopify admin.
- Click Settings in the app's menu, then open the Other tab.
- Find Languages and set Language for emails & Download page.
- Save.
That language is used for everything customer-facing, and remains the fallback for anyone whose own language you have not translated.
Serve each customer their own language
- In the same section, turn on Multi-language support.
- Translate the text customers see, which is a separate step. Without translations, everyone still gets your default language. See Translate the text customers see.
With it on, download pages and email notifications follow each customer's preferred language.
What customers will see
Their download page and email in your default language, or in their own where multi-language is on and a translation exists.
Check your setup
Place a test order and check the email and download page appear in the language you expect. If you turned on multi-language, test with a customer whose preferred language differs from your default. See Create a test order.
Troubleshooting
Everything is still in the default language
Multi-language is on but nothing is translated, so the fallback applies. Translate the surfaces you need. See Translate the text customers see.
Part of the page is translated and part is not
Each surface is translated separately: download page, order email, Thank you page widget, EU consent form, and the notify-buyers email. Anything untranslated falls back.
My custom message is in the wrong language
Product custom messages are written once, in whatever language you typed. They are not translated. See Add custom messages and download instructions.
The multi-language option isn't available
It is a paid feature, shown with an unlock prompt on plans that do not include it. See Filemonk pricing and plans.
FAQ
Where does a customer's language come from?
Their preferred language as your store knows it, which is how Shopify handles multi-language storefronts.
Do I need multi-language if I only sell in one country?
No. Set your default language and leave it off.
Does it translate my file names?
No. File names, product names, and custom messages are your own content and are used as written.
Does changing the default affect past orders?
Yes for anything they view now, such as the download page. Emails already sent keep the language they were sent in.
